Press Release Summary = A PROMINENT Jewish lobby group has withdrawn its support for
an Israeli academic who warned that a growing Muslim population could place
countries - including Australia - at risk of violence.

Press Release Body = The Australia-Israel & Jewish Affairs Council announced it had
cancelled plans to co-host public appearances by Professor Raphael Israeli in
Australia. \"AIJAC is very concerned by Professor Israeli\'s implication that the
Muslim community as a whole is a threat or a danger,\" said its executive director,
Dr Colin Rubenstein. \"His comments are both unacceptable and unhelpful, and AIJAC
cannot be associated with them.\"

An Australian immigration expert has also dismissed suggestions by a visiting
Israeli academic that Islamic migration to Australia should be capped.

The idea was initially floated by Professor Raphael Israeli, who told the Australian
Jewish News that \"you are in trouble\" if the Muslim presence grows to represent 10
percent of a population.

Professor Israeli said Australia could be swamped by large numbers of Muslim
immigrants who manipulated the values of western countries, as has apparently
happened in European nations like France.

But immigration expert Dr James Jupp from the Australian National University
said that would not occur in Australia, as European countries gave full citizenship
to emigrants from ex-colonial nations - many of which are Muslim countries.

As Australia has no colonial ties with Muslim countries like Algeria, it was
unlikely that Muslims would come to this country in such large numbers as they do in
Europe.

Muslims account for about 1.5 per cent of the Australian population.
